The City That Got Faster
Rodrigue Kwizera took seven seconds off a course record that had stood for four years. Florence Niyonkuru won the first 10K she had ever run. And behind them, 16,144 people ran the fastest mid-pack this race has recorded. ISJ was on Cubbon Road from the 5:30 gun.
05:30 — The women go first
The women's race started in the dark. Brenda Jepchirchir, 20, who had run 29:25 in Valencia in January — the fastest 10K in the world this year — went to the front early and hauled in eight runners inside the first quarter. Florence Niyonkuru went through 5K in 15:19 in a group of about seven. By 7 km it was four: Niyonkuru, Jepchirchir, Ethiopia's Melal Siyoum Biratu and Kenya's Judy Chepaskwony, still running under the streetlights.
Niyonkuru had never raced a 10K. She is 25, from Rwanda, trains in Kenya, and she broke the other three somewhere after the lake. With nobody left to run against she drifted off record pace in the last kilometre and still finished in 30:45, ten seconds outside Irene Cheptai's 2022 event record. Jepchirchir was second in 30:59. Chaltu Dida Diriba, sixth at 7 km, kicked through to third in 31:03. Eight women broke 32 minutes, more than in any previous edition.

06:08 — The men
Thirty-eight minutes later the men went off into the first light, and for eight kilometres it was a pack. Rodrigue Kwizera, 26, from Burundi, had been here before: in 2023 he lost this race to Sabastian Sawe by milliseconds — both were given 27:58 — and said he would come back for it. He made the 10,000 m final at the Budapest Worlds that year, trains in Spain, and at 8 km he ran away from Harbert Kibet. Kibet is 20, Ugandan, and had run 26:39 in Spain earlier in the year — on paper the fastest man in the field. He finished eight seconds back in 27:39. Gilbert Kiprotich of Kenya was third in 27:43 in only his second international 10K.
Kwizera's 27:31 took seven seconds off Nicholas Kimeli's 2022 course record and earned him USD 34,000, USD 8,000 of it for the record. Eight men broke 28 minutes. It was, by his own count, only the fifth-fastest 10K of his career.

The Indian race
The Indian men start with the internationals and race two clocks: the one at the front, and the one Abhishek Pal set here a year ago — 29:12. Harmanjot Singh ran 29:13. One second cost him a ₹1,00,000 bonus; it still made him the fastest Indian on the day, 17th across the line, and earned him the ₹3,00,000 first prize. “I wanted to stay with the international elite pack as long as possible,” he said afterwards. Karnataka's Shailesh Kushwaha was second in 29:21, Deepak Bhatt third in 29:52. Pal, the defending champion, was sixth Indian home in 30:31.
Sanjivani Jadhav won the women's title for the third year running and the fifth time in all — 2018, 2019, and every year since 2024. The Nashik runner's 35:01 was a minute slower than her 34:03 here two years ago, and she said so: the plan had been the record. Soniya, sixth last year, took second in 35:31, one second ahead of Bhagirathi.

06:10 — The city
Two minutes after the elite men, the Open 10K began crossing the line at the Parade Ground — 22,189 registered, a start window of 46 minutes 45 seconds, at its peak 37 people a second. The timing data says something about Bengaluru that the podium doesn't. The median finisher ran 64:36, six and a half minutes faster than last year's median. 6,056 people broke the hour — 37.5 per cent of the timed field, up from a quarter in 2025. 1,666 broke 50 minutes. The number finishing beyond 90 minutes fell from 2,908 to 737. One runner in five ran a negative split.
The one number going the wrong way: women were 2,946 of 16,144 timed finishers, 18.3 per cent, the lowest share the race has had in recent years.
